2 Ways To Troubleshoot Your Garage Door

If your garage door suddenly stops working and you can't get it to go up or down, there are a lot of things that you can do to see if you can get it working again before you have to call a garage door repair service to check your door and the automatic opener.

Check For Power

The first thing you are going to want to do is to check out that the opener has power to it. If it has a power cord, make sure that it is plugged in. The next thing to check is your fuse box or circuit breaker. For this step, it doesn't matter if your garage door opener plugs into an outlet or not, if the fuse is blown or the circuit breaker is off, no power is getting to the opener. See if it works after resetting the circuit breaker or changing the fuse.

Check For Dirt

Once you have checked to make sure that there is power to the unit, you want to also make sure that the track and the wheels are both clear and free of any dirt or debris. Dirt and debris can cause a wheel to stick and keep it from going up or down. You are going to need to clean the track and the wheels. Among other things, you are going to want to get all the oil and gunk off the wheels, which should clear out any dirt. However, you are going to need to make sure that you have more lubrication on the wheels and tracks before you can get them working again. There are various spray lubricants that you can use. Make sure that you don't over-lubricate the wheels and the tracks because excess oil can attract more dirt, which can eventually get you back to the same spot you are in now.

Do Not Touch the Springs

When you are trying to figure out what's going on with your garage door, there are some things that you shouldn't try to touch or adjust. Your door may have springs or coils on it to help it go up and down. You shouldn't touch those or try to adjust them. That's because they are under an extreme amount of pressure, and if they were to break, you could be hurt.

If your door isn't working anymore, there are some things you can do to see if you can get it to work. If nothing you can do can make it work, you'll need to call a service tech to have them come and see what the problem is.
